Excellent essay. But a suggestion (not a criticism): the phrase "to call a spade a spade" is a racist statement in the US South, where I grew up. I researched it, before making this comment, and its origin is not racist at all, and I don't take your usage as racist. But... because spades in a deck of cards are black, it became a racist epithet in the South. Something you might want to avoid? (because it diverts attention from what you are really trying to say)
